You just finished unboxing your new ceramic cutter, and now comes the inevitable question: can I just toss it in the dishwasher?
The short answer: technically yes, but probably you shouldn’t.
Here’s why it’s complicated:
1. The Blade Itself Is Dishwasher-Safe—Sort Of
Ceramic is non-porous, rust-proof, and won’t corrode from dishwasher detergents. In fact, many manufacturers (including Kyocera and Boker) label their ceramic knives as dishwasher safe. So chemically speaking, the blade can handle it.
2. The Real Problem: Physical Damage
Ceramic is incredibly hard—second only to diamond—but that hardness comes with brittleness. Inside a dishwasher, water jets bounce items around. If your ceramic blade knocks against metal utensils, plates, or glassware, it can chip, crack, or even snap. Unlike steel, ceramic doesn’t bend—it breaks.
3. Handle Matters
Plastic or synthetic handles are generally dishwasher-safe. But wooden handles? Absolutely not—they’ll warp and crack.
4. Heat and Detergents Are Fine
High heat and harsh detergents won’t damage the ceramic itself. The risk is purely mechanical, not chemical.
So What Should You Do?
Best practice: hand wash with warm water and mild dish soap. Rinse, wipe with a soft sponge, and air dry. It takes 30 seconds and your blade stays pristine for years.
If you must use the dishwasher:
Place it on the top rack only
Keep it separate from other utensils—use a knife basket if available
Never put wooden-handled ceramic knives in
Bottom line: ceramic blades can go in the dishwasher, but one accidental knock could ruin that razor-sharp edge forever. A quick hand wash is the safest bet for longevity. Your blade will thank you.
